Futures Tournaments were first launched by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit in 1998 with the purpose of giving more players the opportunity to gain ranking points and earn money. That first year, 212 Futures Tournaments were scheduled offering a total of $2,635,000 (ITFTennis.com). There are currently over 350 scheduled Futures Tournaments offering over $4 million in prize money. Futures events take place across the world and players travel far and wide to compete in these tournaments with the hopes of breaking through and competing at a higher level. Most players travel full-time as professionals and rely on prize money to continue traveling and competing while some players at Futures Tournaments still identify as amateurs.
The Old Capitol Futures is the first professional tennis tournament in the state of Iowa since 1986. Top players from across the globe will be gathering in Iowa City to compete against each other. This $25,000 event is one of four pro tournaments taking place in the Midwest in July and August and offers ample competitive opportunities for players. Some players are competing to earn money, many are competing to earn a better world ranking, and a few are competing to earn their first world ranking point. The top Old Capitol Futures competitors will likely hold a world ranking as high as 300 while many current college tennis players will start chasing points to improve their chance of success on the pro tour after graduation.
College tennis facilities are ideal to host Futures Tournaments in the US. One reason is because top programs tend to have high quality competition courts and support facilities which can host approximately 90 matches in one week. The Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, home of the Old Capitol Futures, features everything a Futures Tournament needs for success. In addition, the tournament will allow University of Iowa Men's Tennis players to compete at a professional level and the program to showcase its community support and educational environment to players from around the world.
